Neil MacFarlane, Chair of Racing Control at Scottish Rowing, has informed the school that Bob Neill, who was Head of Physics and Master of Rowing at George Heriot's for many years, has died.

In Neil's words, 'Bob organised the Scottish Schools Rowing Council, helped to plan the regattas at the Park and undertook many other less-obvious pieces of support which he provided to various clubs and events over the years. His contribution was all the more impressive because he came from a non-rowing background and always claimed not to know very much about rowing.

Bob was the face of Heriot's rowing for many years. His legacy lives on in several pupils today gaining rowing scholarships around the world and the ongoing success of the Heriot's Rowing Club.

Bob's funeral will take place on Monday 6 February at 15:30 in the Pentland Chapel, Mortonhall Crematorium, 30B Howdenhall Road, Edinburgh, EH16 6TX
