After Many Years May 2023

The 2023 -'12.10' rush.
The 2023 -'12.10' rush.

Saturday 27 May was one of our most anticipated dates in the development diary. The school welcomed back Former Pupils from 1973 and beyond for a reunion like no other.  The summer sun shone, and the Edinburgh wind was kind as 90 Former Pupils arrived at the Quad.

For many this was a familiar trip made over the years at various reunions and gatherings, for others it was the first return since leaving school as fresh face teenagers ready to join the working world. For all there was the common thread of being a Herioter and part of a unique community.

Joining us straight from the golf course, Mr Maurice McIlwrick (1947) was delighted to reacquaint with Mr Alex Gillies (1948) both proudly representing the 1940’s. The subsequent decades were well represented with 13 Former Pupils from the 1950’s, a bumper bunch of 50 from the swinging 60’s, and 13 youngsters from the early 70’s.  It was a pleasure to watch as they all shared stories, anecdotes, and the odd revealing secret across the generations.

Before a delicious buffet lunch, we trooped around the school on various tours, sparking further stories and memories to be shared. On one tour the Former Pupils took charge and lead the development team through the classrooms giving us a good education on the history of each space.

After a brief aperitif in the old refectory, lunch was served, and much enjoyed in the new refectory, a different dining experience to the Former Pupils school day lunches. During Lunch the assembled reunion had the pleasure of hearing from Principal, Gareth Warren on the latest school news, two wonderfully inspiring speeches from School Captains, Tom and Kuzamium, raising much laughter, and Director of External Relations, Miranda Henderson. Miranda spoke of the important work needed to fund and grow the school’s available places for Foundation and Bursary pupils which can only be maintained through the generosity of Former Pupils and Donors who have and continue to support the Foundation400 appeal. If you felt inspired by Miranda’s words please contact the Development Team, we are ready and willing to discuss, inspire and facilitate your fundraising efforts in any way we can, please email: dev@george-heriots.com.

The afternoon was wrapped up with a toast to George Heriot and a hilarious and uproarious speech in reply from Denis Batts (1967). I would recall some of the speech here, but it is really one of those times you needed to be there. A huge thank you to Denis for speaking on the Former Pupils behalf.

Finally, heart-felt thanks from the school to all who attended and made the day a special day. It was fantastic to see Former Pupils reconnect with friends of old, and indeed make new friends. If we can facilitate these connections further, and you are happy for us to share your details with other attendees of this event, or an event you will be going to in the future, please let us know. An email communication will be sent shortly.
