Archives & Family Research

Reflecting the school’s 400-year history, Heriot’s has a large collection of documents, books, artefacts and memorabilia dating back to the early 17th century.

George Heriot’s is a core part of Scotland’s history and, as such, Heriot’s archives hold national significance and are held by the National Records of ScotlandThe National Museum of Scotland and Historic Environment Scotland. A large amount of material is still held within the school’s library collections. Although we are not able to give open access to the public, we try to assist with all enquiries.

Please make initial enquiries regarding our archives to the Development Office.

Our collections include:

  • Correspondence
  • School reports and records
  • Photographs
  • Artwork
  • Artefacts and sporting ephemerae
  • The Herioter (school magazine, founded in 1907)
  • Quadrangle (Heriot community magazine)
  • Books
  • Roll of honour (1914-18 and 1939-45)
