Yesterday we were delighted to welcome the descendent of a Former Pupil of years gone by!

Jill has been working over the years on her family tree which has deep roots in Edinburgh and Scotland, whilst not a Former Pupil herself, she is the descendent of a Former Foundationer, George Somerville, who attended the school along with his brother Charles in the 1820's & 1830's.

Jill had fascinating and plentiful stories of both the Somerville’s, and especially some interesting anecdotes in relation to their father. It was particularly interesting to help Jill discover how George was apprenticed under a R.Brown in Edinburgh from 1834 to 1841. If any of our keen historians can supply any further information on this company, I am sure Jill would be very appreciative! She currently believes it was a brass foundry.

While our archives are limited, there is scope for further research into your own ancestors who are also Former Pupils. You never know what stories could be uncovered.

If you are interested in the history contained within our archives, or want to support the ongoing work of the archivist through a donation to the school, please contact the Development Office on dev@george-heriots.com
