Penny and Pete Take on Jordan Cycling Challenge in Support of Bereaved Children

George Heriot’s School is proud to support Penny and Pete as they take on an extraordinary six-day cycling challenge across Jordan to raise vital funds for two charities that have played an important part in Penny and her daughter Elika’s lives: Child Bereavement UK and the George Heriot’s Foundation. When Penny’s husband, Simon Herniman, died, their daughter Elika lost her father and Penny found herself navigating the enormous challenges of bereavement while adjusting to life as a solo parent.

Elika was offered a place at Heriot's as a Foundation pupil and has thrived with access to the combination of educational, pastoral and bereavement support made to Foundationers and their families, helping young people to flourish during some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

Now, Penny wants to give something back.

Funds raised through the challenge will be split equally between Child Bereavement UK – formerly Winston’s Wish – and the George Heriot’s Foundation, helping both organisations continue to support children and families through bereavement.

The entire Heriot’s community wishes Penny and Pete every success as they take on this remarkable challenge. Their journey is a powerful reminder that the support offered to a bereaved child can have a lasting impact – not only in the immediate aftermath of loss, but throughout the many milestones and moments that follow.
